Privacy Policy

This policy explains what the Singmuse app (currently The Iliad) and the singmuse.app website do with data, on iOS, Android and the web. It is written to be read, not to be survived.

Who we are

Singmuse is a project of codeSTREAM, based in Norderstedt, Germany, which is the controller responsible for the data described here. Full company and contact details are in our legal notice. For anything about this policy, write to [email protected].

What stays on your device

The app saves a small amount of data locally — in the app's own storage on iOS and Android, and in your browser's local storage on the web. It is not sent to us:

• Your reading position, so the app can pick up where you left off.
• How far you have read overall, so progress is only ever counted once.
• Your settings — dialogue typeface, auto-advance speed, volume.
• A record of any purchase you have made, so the app knows what to unlock.

Deleting the app removes all of it. In a browser, clearing site data for singmuse.app does the same.

Anonymous usage statistics

We use PostHog to understand how the app is used in aggregate — how many people open it, how far they read, how many finish. PostHog processes this for us on servers in the European Union.

There is no login, so there is nobody to identify. Each installation is given a random identifier by the analytics library; it is not derived from your device, your phone number or any account, and it is gone when you uninstall or clear site data. The events we record are limited to:

• Starting the novel, and whether it was resumed or begun fresh.
• Starting and finishing a chapter, and passing each 10% of the whole work.
• Finishing the novel.
• A periodic signal while the app is open, so we can see how many people are reading at once.

Along with these, the analytics library records basic technical context: app version, operating system and version, device model or browser, language, and an approximate location (country or region) derived from your IP address at the moment the event arrives. We do not store your IP address ourselves, and PostHog is instructed not to keep it beyond that lookup.

We do not use session recording, heatmaps, surveys, advertising identifiers, or any cross-app or cross-site tracking. Nothing here is used to build a marketing profile of you, and none of it is passed to third parties for their own purposes.

Crash and error reports

When the app hits an error we send a report to Sentry, so we can fix it. A report contains the error and where in our code it happened, plus the device model, operating system version and app version. Sentry processes these on servers in the United States. Reports are kept for up to 90 days and then deleted automatically.

Crash reports contain none of the content you read and nothing you have typed — the app has no text input.

Purchases

The novel is free. The optional Patron Edition is sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play, and those stores handle the entire transaction. Your payment details, your billing address and your store account are never seen by us: the store simply tells the app that a purchase succeeded, and the app unlocks what you bought.

Apple and Google process that purchase under their own privacy policies. If you need a refund or a purchase history, that is a matter for the store, not for us.

The website

The singmuse.app website is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and embeds no third-party trackers. As with any website, our hosting provider records standard server logs (IP address, time, page requested, browser) for security and for keeping the service running; these are kept only briefly.

The browser version of the novel, reachable from the home page, behaves like the app: the same local storage and the same anonymous statistics described above.

Turning it off

In the browser version, adding ?noanalytics or ?nosentry to the address disables usage statistics or crash reporting for that session. On iOS and Android, uninstalling the app ends all reporting.

Why we are allowed to do this

Under the GDPR, we rely on our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) in understanding whether the app works and whether people can finish what they started — an interest we have weighed against the very limited, non-identifying data involved. Where a purchase is concerned, processing is necessary to perform our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b)). If you write to us, we use your message to answer it and for nothing else.

How long we keep things

• Local data — until you delete the app or clear your browser storage.
• Crash reports — up to 90 days.
• Usage events — retained in aggregate for as long as they inform decisions about the app, and deleted on a rolling basis.
• Emails you send us — as long as the conversation is live, plus any period German law requires us to keep business correspondence.

Your rights

If you are in the EU or the UK you have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable form. You may also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work.

One honest caveat: because the app collects nothing that identifies you, we usually cannot connect a request to a specific installation, and so we may be unable to find "your" data in order to hand it over or delete it. Uninstalling remains the surest way to end the collection. If you want to exercise a right, write to [email protected] and we will do what we can.

Children

The Iliad is an ancient war poem and the adaptation keeps its violence; the app is not aimed at young children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children, and because there are no accounts and no personal details asked for, there is nothing about a child that the app could reveal.

International transfers

Usage statistics are processed within the European Union. Crash reports are processed in the United States by Sentry, on the basis of the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, which is the safeguard that permits the transfer.

Changes to this policy

If the app starts doing something this page does not describe, we will update the page and change the date at the top. Since there are no accounts, there is no way for us to notify you individually — the current version always lives at singmuse.app/privacy.html.
